Materials science is a study of combinations of fields and termed as materials science and engineering, involves the discovery and designing, with much attention on solids. Materials Science is basically the study of distinct materials and their properties which could vary with change in conditions like pressure, temperature, size etc.
One major area is the application of lightweight materials to the structural integrity of robotic manipulators. Most engineers don't think about it much, but the added mass of an aluminium or iron shield adds to the cost dramatically. Because then you have to size up your servos or Motors to account for this extra mass along with the power needed. If you can reduce the mass on each link of your manipulator by says 50%, this directly correlates to a reduction in production costs as well.
Robots are mostly built of common materials. There are variant types of robots. The operation and strength required are major factors in material selection. Materials and Manufacturing deals with issues that result in best utilization of raw materials and energy, integration of manufacturing and design activities requiring the invention of suitable new manufacturing processes and techniques, unmanned production dependent on efficient and reliable control of various activities including intelligent processing, discovery of new materials in industrial production necessary for new manufacturing process technology.

Medical Robots in Action
Technology has been advancing tremendously. Now it is not necessary to go clinics or distant places to get connect with doctors. Doctors can access and diagnose the patient remote presence of technology.
Moreover, Surgical robots are precise, dexterous and soon they will take over the operating room. TSolution One is an orthopedic surgical robot, it can cut through the bone at incredibly precise angles.
There are many robots working for different sections as the Da Vinci is a teleoperated robot for abdominal surgery consist of four arms have a greater range of motion than human hands. The system magnifies the view of the procedure and translates surgeon’s movements into smaller, more precise robotic movements. Researchers at Berkeley are exploring how to automate surgical task with a Da Vinci.
Flex can be steered down a patient’s throat allowing for minimally invasive surgeries on previously inaccessible regions.
Artas autonomous performs hair- graft surgeries identifying best hair follicles for harvesting, cut them out, and make tiny incisions for the transplant.
CyberKnife can deliver a targeted beam of high dose radiation from any angle. Which allow the operation where previously it was inoperable. The system plans its course by taking data and CT scan and then automatically adjusts correcting for patient’s movement and minimizing radiation to healthy tissue.
Renaissance provides guidance during spinal surgery, prior to the surgery the software uses 3D scans to analyze a patient’s anatomy finding areas of symmetry and helping the surgeon make decisions, the 3D syncing system maps the scans to the patient, vertebra by vertebra. During surgery a guidance unit positions the surgeon's instruments, allowing for 1.5mm accuracy.
Artificial bacterial flagella are about half of the thickness of a human hair10 micrometer. They can swim at a speed of up to one body length per second. This means that they already resemble their natural role models very closely.

What is the functional unit of Robotics?
Body Structure- Most robots consist of a metal-based physical body structure that provides protection to the internal mechanisms within the robot. The body shape or structure is based on the robots intended use or function.
Muscle Systems- The muscle systems of robots can be made up of a number of different mechanisms. The most popular muscle mechanisms are gears, pneumatic actuators, artificial muscle, and thrusters.
Sensory Systems- A robot's sensory system can be very simple or very complex, depending on the function of the robot. Simple sensory systems make use of devices such as simple motion detectors, while complex sensory systems use optical cameras that enable the robot to not only see the environment around it but interact with the environment based on its surroundings.
Power Source- The power source used in most robots comes from an electric power supply. The two most common forms of electric power supplies for robots are grounded electrical power outlets for stationary robots or internal battery units for mobile robots.
Brain System- The "brain" system of robots is closely related to and work for hand in hand with the sensory system. Brain systems of robots can also be either very simple or very complex, depending on the function of the robot. A simple "brain" system would send a signal to the robot’s muscle system telling it to stop if a sensory system detected was activated. A complex "brain" system would allow a robot to identify objects within the environment around it, based on the information gathered by the sensory systems. The "brain system" would then send signals to the muscle systems based on that information, enabling the robot to interact with the objects surrounding it. If we go beyond the Artificial Intelligence come into play.

Autonomous Vehicle
An Autonomous Vehicles or self-driving vehicle is the one of the technology in which all the Giant Automobile companies are concern about. It is a vehicle that continuously sensing its environment and navigates itself without human interference.
Autonomous vehicles use a variety of technologies to sense its surroundings, to control its speed, identify its location via Mapping and else methods using radar, laser light, GPS, odometry and computer vision. The Advanced control systems installed in the autonomous vehicle to sense required information which helps to identify the appropriate location, sudden obstacles, and relevant display signs. It has control systems that can take control from the driver and work on the different situation by analysing the data from the sensors to distinguish between different vehicles on the road and tackle the situation to maintain safety.
As experts define the 5 levels of the autonomous vehicle which is mainly differed by the control and responsibility of the Vehicle itself mention below-
Level 1- “Driver assistance”, Level 2- “Partly Automated Driving (PAD)”, Level 3- “Highly Automated Driving”, Level 4- “Fully Automated Driving”, Level 5- “Full Automation”
The benefits of autonomous vehicles increased safety, mobility, customer satisfaction and reduced crime. Specifically, a significant reduction in traffic, injuries, loss of life and related costs. Autonomous vehicles are predicted to very much useful to enhance mobility for children, the elderly, disabled and the poor, lower fuel consumption, especially via the sharing economy. This shows the vast disruptive potential of the emerging technology.
Obstacles to widespread adoption!
The technological challenges like liability, a time needed to replace the existing stock of vehicles, a risk of loss of privacy, consumer safety concerns and security concerns, concerns about the resulting loss of driving-related jobs in the road transport industry. Many of these issues are as autonomous objects, for the first time, allow computers to roam freely, with many related safety and security concerns. Arising a big dispute how much control should be given to autonomous robots.

Zhikuan Zhao- (Ph.D. student with the Singapore University of Technology and Design)
"The previous quantum algorithm of this kind applied to a very specific type of problem. We need an upgrade if we want to achieve a quantum speedup for other data”
A linear system requires a large matrix of data. The network may catch authentic information about value developments after some time and information about highlights that could be impacting these costs, for example, cash trade rates. The calculation computes how firmly each element is corresponded with another by 'modifying' the network. This data would then be able to be utilized to extrapolate into what's to come.
"There is a great deal of calculation engaged with breaking down the grid. When it gets past say 10,000 by 10,000 passages, it turns out to be hard for established PCs", This is claiming the number of computational advances runs up quickly with the number of components in the framework: each multiplying of the matrix estimate expands the length of the count eight-overlap.
The 2009 calculation could adapt better to the greater matrix, yet just if the information in them is what's known as ‘sparse’. In these cases, there are constrained connections among the components, which is regularly not valid for genuine information.
As an unpleasant guide, for a 10,000 square matrix, the established calculation would go up against the request of a trillion computational advances, the main quantum calculation about 10,000s of steps and the new quantum calculation only 100s of steps. The calculation depends on a strategy known as quantum singular value estimation.
To demonstrate a real quantum advantage over the classical algorithms will require the bigger quantum computers. "We're possibly taking a gander at three to five years later when we can really utilize the equipment worked by the experimentalists to do the important quantum calculation with application in computerized reasoning."

Latest Updates on Mechatronics & Robotics
What is a Mechatronics?
The term was coined in 1971 by Tetsuro Mori, an engineer at a robotics company, Yaskawa Electric Corp. He combined the words "mechanical" and "electronic" to describe the electronic control systems that Yaskawa was building for mechanical factory equipment.
Mechatronics is a combination of different field of knowledge, a combination of engineering fields like mechanical, electronics, computer, telecommunications etc. It focuses on designing, manufacturing and maintaining products that have both mechanical, electronic components and computer intelligence as well which broaden the area of involvement of mechatronics. To understand it properly let’s take an example of an automobile consist of mechanical frame, parts, and joints with electrical components like sensor, transducer, battery, pneumatic tire pressure monitoring system, anti-lock brakes, at last, the resisters/ logic gates which are embedded in the IC chips or components helps to store the programming.
Why is mechatronics important?
It offers the development of new technologies, robotics, automation in the industry, innovation of devices, products, and systems. It also plays an important role in specializations in several important fields such as medicine, aeronautics, chemistry and information technologies.

Brain-Machine Interfacing for Hand Paralysis
A combination of brain and machine interface with an automated gadget which controls the hand movement, it expands the yield of pathways associating the brain cells and spinal cords, as per the study of healthy adults published in The Journal of Neuroscience (an official journal of Society for Neuroscience). This work could have implications for restoring function in stroke patients with hand loss of motion. http://www.sfn.org/About/Mission-and-Strategic-Plan
Participants were requested to envision opening their hand without basically making any movement while their hand was set in a gadget that opens and shuts their fingers as it got the essential information signals from their brain. This demonstrates that stimulating the hand area of the motor cortex at the same time, but not after, the robotic device-initiated hand movement increased the strength of the neural signal, most likely by harnessing the processing energy of additional neurons in the corticospinal tract (It is one of the major pathways for carrying movement-related information from the brain to the spinal cord) as same as the wire carrying energy or signals to the electric motor for movement..
However, the signal decreased when they were not visualizing the movement of the hand. Delivering brain stimulation and robotic motor feedback simultaneously during rehabilitation may, therefore, be beneficial for patients who have lost voluntary muscle control.

Robot Fish Mimic Live Fish
Robots are developing at such a lightning speed that it started mirroring as a live creature. For decades, biomimetic robots have been developed besides live animals to understand the animals.
Researchers at NYU Tandon, using advances in real-time tracking software and robotics, have designed the first closed-loop control system featuring a robot interacting in three dimensions with live zebrafish. The robotic replica can "see" and “mimic” the behavior of live zebrafish in real time. It is the first of their kind to interact with Zebrafish.
The interaction of the robot fish and live fish was done under a different experimental condition, to reach the perfection, but in all the situation, both fish separated by a transparent panel, zebrafish showed good positive response, nor anxiety or fear towards the robot fish that mimic its own behavior rather than a usual programmed pattern of swimming.
Well, the mirroring is an only basic, very simple social interaction. These experiments were the first step towards enriching the exchange between robots and live animals, so in the next step, there is an ability to measure the response of the zebrafish to the robot fish in the real-time and allow the robot to watch and respond in the real time.

Nanoscale Metal Structures Using 3-D Printing
The emerging process can be used in a variety of manufacturing process, from building tiny components to creating 3-D logic circuits which will be ultralightweight. It also opens a new way to create a new class of materials with unusual properties based on their internal structure.
The objects are built layer by layer to create a structure that would be not possible to manufacture by usual methods known as additive manufacturing. 3-D lattices whose beams are just nanometers across, not visible to the naked eye. These materials exhibit unique and surprising properties. They also created exceptionally lightweight ceramics that come back to its original shape, whenever it is compressed.
This new 3-D prints structures out of a variety of materials, however, have been difficult to print, especially when trying to create structures with dimensions smaller than around 50 microns, or about half the width of a human hair. It works at the nanoscale, a high-precision laser zaps the liquid in specific locations of the material with just two photons, or particles of light Providing enough energy to harden the polymer liquid to solid state, but not enough to fuse metal.
Metals don't respond to light in the same way as the polymer resins that we use to manufacture structures at the nanoscale, there’s a chemical reaction that gets triggered when light interacts with a polymer that enables it to harden and then form into a shape which is not possible in metal. Organic ligands were used, molecules that bind to metal to create a resin containing mostly polymer, but which carries along with it metal that can be printed, like a scaffold. This is all done by the initial phase of designing a structure in the computer.
Participate in the conference Mechatronics & Robotics 2018 for the discussion on the latest upcoming technologies in the field of Material science.
